7 - How to not be deceived

This is the Trickiest Topic of Them All

This is seriously the hardest blog post to write in this mini-series. There are a lot of forces in this world and many of them use some truth and rightness, mixed with deception and darkness, to fool you into going down the wrong path.

Honestly, I think I've been deceived all the time. It is very difficult in this current world to understand things through God's eyes.

The good news is that there are a few times in my life where I know that I was doing the right thing, or receiving a prompting from God. So I hang on to those as a base reference to help me understand better what to do. There are a couple other tricks that I would like to show you today.

A Warning Before we Continue

Just a warning, if you want these things to work in your life, you better be doing the things in blog post 2 - How to get revelation and blog post 3 - Rolling back the distractions

Emphasis (and not for the last time!) on being true to yourself and getting rid of any form of deceit in your life. If you cannot be true to yourself, how can you expect to know the truth of things outside of yourself?

The Simple Test

There is a simple test you can use and refine throughout your life. When you come upon a question you have, reach down into your spirit and ask -
does this invite me to do good and be better?
Then listen for what you feel.

Most questions we ask this about are really complex. There are very few sources of pure good or of pure evil on the earth, so likely you won't get a purely good answer or a purely evil answer.

That is why this simple test is so hard. It is a valid test, but the results are hard to decipher.

The Refinement

To get better at using the simple test, we need to examine the times that we use it very carefully.

First examine, what kind of feeling you are getting when you ask a question. This may sound funny, but think about the 'color' of the feeling. You aren't necessarily asking 'is this yellow or red...' (although you can ask that too :D), but instead describe to yourself what the feeling is like and what are the different shades of it. You are basically building a profile of the feeling so that you can recognize it later.

The other thing to do is to try to separate the different parts of the feeling. When making a decision, is there a part you feel good about and a part you feel bad about? Separate those parts out as best you can so you can identify why you feel easy or uneasy with it. Divide the light from the darkness, so to speak.

Write down all your impressions in a spiritual journal dedicated to that purpose. Write down how you felt, what you experienced, and your description of the feelings. You can come back later and write out the results of your feelings as well. In this manner, you begin building a personal guide tailored to yourself of how to discern between truth and error. You can go back at any time and see how you are progressing. Super cool!

As you understand more, you will get better and better about holding more onto the good and letting go of the bad. When you get mixed feelings, you can find out why it is mixed, and either exit out of the situation, or at least get rid of what is not good. You will also be able to choose better and better sources to help you through life.
